Crazy Week!

This week in the NFL it was a crazy one.  There were many outcomes that were not expected and that would most likely to not occur nine times out of ten.  A 13-0 team a 0-13 both beat the odds this week.  A fan favorite quaterback finally loses.  And the Cleveland Kids almost pull off a W.

First off the undefeated Packers lose in a nail biter.  They lost to the Kansas City Cheifs.  I watched this game and it just seemed like the Cheifs were better prepared for this game.  They came in with more heart and wanted it more.  However, this had the looks of comeback all over it when Aaron Rogers had a quick fourth quarter touchdown to make it a one score game.  But, the Packers couldn't do it.  The Cheifs ended up victorious.
The Colts finally won game.  The improve to 1-13.  They were able to beat the Tennessee Titans 27-13.  I don't know how they did it, but, the Titans must be embarrassed to have lost to such a bad team.  Actually, the Colts just performed today.  They were able to execute key plays and create oppurtunities.

Tim Tebow could not do it this week.  He started off with a great start having to early scores.  However, Tom Brady proved to be too good for the Broncos defense to handle.  The Broncos lost to the Patriots by a score of 41-23.

The Browns almost joined the excitement this week with an overtime thriller.  Seneca Wallace proved to do very well at quarterback.  However, the coaches lost the game this time.  In overtime the Browns had no need to worry about the time.  They have 15 minutes to score.  So why didn't they return to their normal offense?  They should have gone back to playing Cleveland football.  That is how they were able to get into overtime in the first place.
Well, it was a crazy week!  Until next time, the Guru is out.

What to do, What to do

Well, it’s been a while since football has been over and I have been acclimating to life without it everyday after school.  It is weird to get used to, but it feels nice to finally experience senior pass.  To stay involved in football I, of course, watch it all the time.  I also play fantasy football with a bunch of my amigos.  My team is completely average.  I have some good weeks, and some not so good weeks.  At the rate I’m going I pry won’t make the playoffs.  Oh well, fantasy sports have never really been my thing.

In other news, the BCS standings are now updated!  At 10 representing the Big 10 is Wisconsin.  Hopefully Russell Wilson and their powerful offense can keep them rolling.  At 9 is South Carolina.  I haven’t really been following South Carolina this year, however, they are a consistent team each year.  So, I can see them earning this spot.  8, 7, 6, and 5 belong to Kansas State, Boise State, Arkansas, and Oregon, respectively.  I 100% agree with every one of those choices.  Stanford has possession of the number four spot.  If they wish to keep that spot their offense needs to keep producing and their defense needs to step up.

Now, the big controversy between the number 3 and 2 spot.  Oklahoma State and Alabama.  Alabama is listed at two right now and I think that that is the way it should be.  Unlike Oklahoma State Alabama has an offense AND a defense.  They will need both in order to take down LSU who owns number 1.  Oklahoma State has a very productive offense but their defense is lacking.  LSU will destroy them if they don’t get it going.  LSU’s defense is the heart of their team.  They will be able to stop OSU and run all over them with their offense.

All in all I agree with the BCS standings right now and hope that they remain the same.

New Talk, New News

Well, this week in the world of football there has been a lot going on.  An NFL defensive tackle, Gerald McCoy was placed on the IR for, in my opinion, one of the worst injuries you could recieve.  Also, Joe Paterno was just fired from the head coaching position of the Penn State Nittany Lions.

First off, Gerald McCoy.  This starting defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Bucaccaneers will have to sit out for the rest of the season with a torn bicep.  This week in regular season action against the New Orleans Saints was when the injury occurred.  This is the second year in a row that he will have to prematurely end his season because of a torn bicep. However, last year it was his left bicep that was torn.  It is obvious that the already struggling Buccanneers(4-4) will take a major hit from this loss.  If the Bucs would have won this game it would have kept them in second place in the NFC South with a shot at a conference championship.  However, with the lost the dropped to third with little to no hope of winning conference, qualifying for playoffs or even having a chance at the wild card slot.

Next up, Joe Paterno.  This is a major controversy that I have VERY mixed emotions on.  I recognize that Joe did what he was legally obligated to do by passing it on the athletic director.  I realize that he can not go to the cops, he can not because he would have been going on accusations that he heard.  But, what I do not get is even after the incident occurred and Sandusky no longer coached, JoePa still allowed him in the State College campus.  He should not have let Sandusky hang around the campus, or practice, Sandusky even had kids with him at some of the practices he attended.  Sandusky is a sick freak.  JoePa should have recognized this and not allowed him on the campus.  You would figure that since Joe is a father and grandfather, that he would be a whole lot more sensitive to this issue and take drastic action to ensure that this would not happen again.  Unfortunately, he did not and since the first accusation there have been quite a few kids that have come out saying that they have had...unfortunate...run ins with Sandusky recently.  I don't know what should be done and that is why I am in the position to make these decisions.

Overall, it has been a very wierd and unfortunate week in the world of football.  Well, until next time, The Guru is out.

Season over

I'm back, I'm back, I'm back.  It's okay don't worry I won't leave you again, Arra.  I think I'm going to post even when I'm done with this class.  <3   :)   Hehehehe okay I'll get started if you insist, only for Stanley of course.

Okay so our season is over now and we went out with a bang.  We destroyed Amherst 52-0.  We were able to throw the ball and run it as well.  We even put in a half back pass for Coach Dlugosz's father.  It went for a touchdown.  Chris said that he was so nervous when the ball was in the air.  He said that Mr. Dlugosz caught that pass for him.  I'm sure that made coach happy.  So yeah, we went undefeated in the SWC and we were the first team to do that since 2007.
Even though we went 8-2 we did not make it into the playoffs.  If we had been in any other region in Ohio we would have made it in.  Region 2 is that hardest region to qualify for playoffs and we were ranked 9th by .2 points, you need to be in the top 8 to make it in.  That was a real heart-breaker.
We would have made it in if Shaker had not forfeited in week 8.  I don't know what their coach was thinking.
We also would have made it in if Toledo Whitmer would have been disqualified.  They have been illegally recruiting players and they have players playing that don't even live in Ohio.  THEY LIVE IN MICHIGAN!!!

]Oh well, what's done is done.  We had a very good season and I will never forget these memories.
Until next time, the Guru is out.

SWC

Oh, why hello there.  Do you come here often?  Yes, Arra I'm talking to you.  How are you? I'm fine thank you.  Well, enough of that, let's get into the blog...
So, this past week we beat the Olmsted fall bulldogs to take the SWC.  However, this week determines whether we get the title outright or if we have to share it.  If Olmsted Falls manages to beat North Olmsted then they have a shot at the title because they have one loss.  However, for them to share a portion with us that requires us losing to Amherst.  Personally, I like our chances against Amherst.  BUT!  This is a team that has nothing to lose.  I bet they will try trick plays on offense and even the special teams.  That's right I said special teams.  They have done a reverse on a kick off and even passed it across the field.  With the unpredictability of Amherst it will make for a tough game.
With the SWC under our belts, there have already been talks of playoffs.  For us to make the playoffs we need some things to happen first.  We have to win against Amherst.  We also need Midview to beat North Ridgeville, and for Canton Mckinley to beat Massillon Jackson.  I believe that this is what needs to happen for us to go to the playoffs but I could be wrong.  We might need more teams to lost for all I know.
Hopefully our luck doesn't run out in terms of these teams losing.  All we need to focus on is beating Amherst.   Until next time, the Guru is out!!!!

Prime Time

It’s alright everybody, I was not hibernating, and I’m back.  This post is all about a football great.  He is a Hall of Fame cornerback and he is almost as good as me.  His name is Deion Sanders and he is a man.  He went to high school at North Fort Myers High School.  He played baseball, basketball, and football and he lettered in all them.  He played football, baseball, and track for Florida State University.  His freshman year he started corner for the football team, helped the track team win a conference championship, and helped the baseball team finish 5th in the nation.  Yeah, he is that talented.

Deion faced a crossroads with his career. One that very few people have come across and experienced.  It was, will he go to the MLB or the NFL.  He decided to do something amazing.  He played in both leagues.  He was a standout in both the MLB and the NFL.  Sanders is the only professional athlete to hit a homerun and score a touchdown in the same week.
With all this success came a lot of publicity to Deion.  He is known to many as Deion “Prime Time” Sanders.  Deion also has that feature that many envy.  He knows that he is the best player on every field that he walks on, and he doesn’t let the other team forget it.  Deion is confident, well composed, and above all cocky.  He is ranked number 1 by many forums, websites, TV shows, etc. as the cockiest player of all time.  He is ranked higher than TO, Chad Ochocinco, and many others.
Brian Dawkins is my favorite current player.  However, my favorite player of all time is Deion Sanders.  He displays his athletic ability as well as his confidence in every sport let alone game that he is in.  He was recently inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Until next time, the Guru is out.

Here we go again...

So, recently I finally got on my twitter game (get at me @MikeRussell28).  After trying to figure out how to work it for quite some time I learned how to "tweet" and follow people.  I decided to follow my favorite NFL player Brian Dawkins.  Brian (yes we are on a first name basis) is a man on the field.  He takes on OT's that have almost 100lbs on him and he stands his ground.  He is relentless and he plays like there is no tomorrow.  And when Brian walks on to the field you would think that he just won the Super Bowl.  He starts jumping, screaming, sprinting, crawling, somersaulting, and high-fiving.  He does this to not only get himself pumped, but to also get his team pumped.

(No I was not crazy, and this is not photoshopped, he actually crawls onto the field)

This is not the only reason Brian is my favorite player.  Brian is a man that does not let anything get to him.  He doesn't let the stuff other people say affect him or how he plays.  A majority of his tweets are  about how we need to not listen to what other people say.  He said to not let people's opinions that are trying to bring you down succeed.  Right now our football team is going through this.  We are facing a lot of adversity off the field and we can not let that affect how we play.  We can't even let that get to us.  Because if we make a stupid decision based on a impulse because of a comment there could be some serious consequences.

Over the years Brian has taken a lot of ridicule because of his playing style or what kind of person he is in general.  He doesn't let it get to him.  He just uses this as a sort of fuel to his fire.  This is what the team needs to do now on the field and not let it get to us off the field.

Week 5

Okay, so we, the Avon Lake Shoremen, are now 2-2.  We have played Avon, Shaker Heights, Massillon Jackson, and North Olmsted.  This week we are set to play Midpark at Midpark’s (so called) home field at Baldwin-Wallace College.

The Meteor’s are looking decent this year with a good passing attack and an iffy run game.  I feel as if we are going to do well even though our pass defense has not been looking so hot this year.  I expect us to get a good pass rush and to be able to get some hands on the ball on defense.
I also feel like our offense will have a good game.  I think that Dontez will decide to just break loose and that Chris will get the opportunity to pass the ball.  If he gets that opportunity I really hope that he will look like Mike Vick with a deadly passing and rushing attack.  And we all hope that Brett will just be a hero like he was last game.  Also we are looking forward to the best wingback in league to step up get some pancakes se he can make the highlight film that will be better than Mac’s.  All in all I expect that we will do better this week, we can’t come out to cocky though.

After our game Friday night we will have films Saturday morning to evaluate our performance.  After that it is still all football.  Saturday I expect to watch football, watch some more football and top it all off by watching football with Stanley.  I hear that he is a big fan of the Georgia Bulldogs.  I bet that he would be a bigger fan of a team with a mascot of a pug.  Just saying.  Until next time, the Guru is out.

Football Memories (Influential Groups)

Well, I was just at one of the most unique experiences I have ever encountered.  I just got home from waiting an hour and forty-five minutes for my check at a restaurant.  Wow that was painful.  Anyway, like I said in my last blog I have had football in my life for as long as I can remember.  With football in my life for this long a lot of memories are associated with it.  Memories that are usually funny and remind me of good times.  I can't really think of any bad memories that I have had with football other than breaking my leg.  My favorite memories usually involve me and Danny Robinson (and sometimes Michael Curtis) doing stupid stuff.

At football practice when we were in 8th grade Danny and I were chosen to go on the punt return team and basically get demolished by the other kids.  Kids who were bigger, faster, and stronger than us.  We had no chance.  For some reason Jake was annoying me and Danny.  Danny and I decided to take out his legs on one of the punts as some sort of sick revenge.  We executed it perfectly; I took out his left ankle and Danny took out his right ankle and Jake ate dirt.  That was the beginning of the Brick Wall Squad.  We did not realize it but one of the most powerful and influential squads to ever hit Avon Lake had just been formed and we were not aware of it.  The official forming of the Brick Wall Squad is another great memory.  It was the first day of full contact our Junior year and Danny was playing corner back and I was playing safety.  Brett kept running the ball to Danny's side and Danny made textbook tackles by taking out Brett's ankles.  This time it was the bigger, faster, and stronger kids who had no chance.  We had found their one weakness...their ankles.  That same year in a scrimmage against Twinsburg, Danny and I were playing defense and Twinsburg was on offense.

Twinsburg had one (attempted) run to me and Danny's side.  Needless to say that was the last play that went to our side.  Twinsburg's running back went off in a stretcher if I remember correctly.  His injury being Absenceofanklesitis.  He had complained about running into a brick wall in the secondary; and that is how the name was created.  Yeah, that sounds about right.  Anyway with the formation of the Brick Wall Squad we were untouchable.  Michael Curtis noticed how influential we were and wanted to join the group.  We told him there was no way because there was a limit on the amount of members in this squad, two.  We then decided to make the second most influential group in all of ALHS.  This is the Brain Trust.  The amount of members in this group is greater than the Brick Wall Squad's, there are three.   The Brain Trust was a group of extraordinary gentlemen who stood next to each other during the Varsity football games and took notice of how the moon would line up directly between the field's lights.  You might make fun of us now but at the next Shoremen game, about halfway through the fourth quarter look up and you'll see what I mean.  Well I got talking about nothing again.  Dang.  Even though this was just a story of the creation of some amazing groups it was good to take a trip down memory lane.  Ta ta for now.

Football and my Life

Ah, football.  It has been in my life and the lives of millions of kids, parents, and coaches.  Oh, and it has also been in the life of a dog named Stanley but that is beside the point.

I have had football in my life for as long as I can remember.  I remember going out on any day of the week rain or shine and playing catch with my dad or brothers.  I started to officially play full contact football in 5th grade for a team in a little town named Dunlap.  The teams's name was the Dunlap Eagles and we were not good.  With my muscular stature and height that was equivalent to Shaq's they had me playing outside linebacker and tight end.  Yes, I know what all of you are thinking. You think that I was like Clay Matthew's out on the field and tossing offenders out of the way to make that tackle only to emerge from the pile-up as majestically as Hasselhoff would run down the beach to make a save.  Surprisingly, I was not.  It was a bigger mistake to put  me at these positions than for the Broncos to trade Hillis to the Browns.  Oh well.  After playing there for a few years my family had to move to none other than Avon Lake, Ohio.  I started playing for the Shoremen in 8th grade and the coaches made the right decisions and moved me to more suitable positions. I have stayed at  wide receiver and safety ever since.  Now I am a senior and start at Free Safety for the Shoremen.  Everyday while signing autographs or receiving fan mail people ask me why I play football.  I respond with the same two word answer ever time.  "For Stanley" is what I respond with, they know what it means.  Until next time, the Guru is out.
